   ... Recordava-se Don Licas de quando era ainda uma criança, nos idos da década de 1950. 

    Sempre imaginara como seria a passagem do século XX para o século XXI. Duvidava que ainda presenciaria este momento pois a história corrente naquela época era que o mundo não chegaria ao ano 2000 em virtude de uma terceira e arrasadora guerra mundial. Ele também duvidava que seria tão longevo para chegar em seus 50 anos exatamente na virada do século.

    Mas, lá estava ele pronto para testemunhar a tão sonhada virada de século.

    Sua vida até então havia sido cheia de acontecimentos raros e de passagens muito interessantes.        

    Era um bem sucedido guru nas artes digitais e na ciência da computação pois havia sido um dos pioneiros nestas áreas no país e tornara-se desde muito cedo emocionalmente e financeiramente muito sólido em função de sua revolucionária atividade profissional. Muito bem recompensado pelas benesses da vida e precoce em suas habilidades, aos seus 20 anos já dirigia sua própria moto e seu próprio carrão, comprados com produto de seu próprio esforço. Não faltou em sua juventude nem dinheiro nem mulheres bonitas nem as muitas viagens pelos quatro cantos do mundo que sua atividade profissional requeria e muito conhecimento e discernimento lhe trouxeram.

    Ainda muito jovem, aos 25 anos, já despontava como um profissional experiente com profundos conhecimentos das tecnologias digitais que estavam sendo descobertas naquele momento na história, as quais ajudara a desenvolver em plena meca da tecnologia da informação do momento, os EUA. Bem no meio do maior boom tecnológico do século XX, e talvez de toda a história da humanidade, lá estava Don Licas estudando e desenvolvendo projetos mundiais muito importantes como os projetos on-line real-time do CitiBank, da Sears e outros, explorando as infinitas capacidades de uma descoberta fantástica daqueles anos, o microprocessador eletrônico. 

    Aos 32 anos tornara-se líder de outro projeto mundial reunindo as maiores bolsas de Commodities de todo o mundo em outro sistema on-line real-time, sua especialidade na época, que o levou a participar do desenvolvimento do famoso e revolucionário microprocessador multi-tasking Intel 80286, o coração e cérebro do famoso computador IBM PC-AT dos idos do inicio dos anos 80. Nesta empreitada era Beta-tester da Intel Corporation com acesso ao desenvolvimento de tecnologia digital do gigante da informática em Houston, no Texas. Tinha privilégios de acesso a informações técnicas de novos produtos em desenvolvimento com status semelhante aos engenheiros de outra empresa concorrente que despontava na mesma época, criada nos EUA em uma garagem, denominada Microsoft, de um engenheiro de sua mesma idade chamado Bill Gates.

    Nesta época de ouro dos anos 80, aos trinta e poucos anos de idade, falava 4 idiomas e já havia morado em dois países no exterior. Havia casado duas vezes e tido dois filhos, os dois nascidos no exterior e em países diferentes.  Muito experiente e articulado, criava no Brasil novos produtos de ponta como o software dos caixas bancários eletrônicos para os primeiros sistemas de banco-online e os pontos de venda eletrônicos para as redes de magazines, e os demonstrava em congressos técnicos e feiras de informática para públicos especializados e até mesmo para o presidente da república e seus ministros. Proferia palestras técnicas em eventos e universidades demonstrando suas idéias e seus produtos para um público muito carente de informações técnicas atuais e inovadoras num país que havia ficado para trás por duas décadas em função da Lei de Reserva de Mercado criada pelos Presidentes-generais criados pela Revolução Militar de 1964. 

    Este havia sido o diferencial de Don Licas. Sua determinação e coragem em deixar seu rendoso e confortavel emprego público na Prefeitura de São Bernardino e optado por juntar-se às multinacionais de informática que operavam no país tornou-o um profissional de conhecimentos ímpares para o padrão brasileiro de então e muito disputado e muito bem pago pelos empresários locais que queriam inovar seus negócios aplicando as novas e revolucionárias ferramentas eletrônicas desenvolvidas nos EUA. 

    Não demorou muito para tornar-se independente e criar sua primeira empresa de desenvolvimento de software e consultoria de novos produtos de informática. Grandes empresas o contratavam para empreitadas ousadas e gigantescas que envolviam o estabelecimento de novos negócios tanto no Brasil como nos EUA. Tornou-se um usuário regular de vôos internacionais e não raro via-se em dois ou três países numa mesma semana.

    Diferente da simplicidade de sua vida na infância tornara-se uma pessoa influente em seu meio profissional e remunerado com os melhores salários entre os executivos de sua época. Com isto, havia se tornado rico. Construira um significativo patrimônio e não lhe faltavam prazeres e sua vida farta e vistosa era um atrativo muito grande para todos. Especialmente para as mulheres... As muitas mulheres de sua vida.

    ...Fato é que, neste momento em 1999, depois de tantas andanças e tantas realizações, prestes a completar 50 anos, Don Licas estava pronto para começar uma nova, deslumbrante e inesperada fase em sua vida. E tudo aconteceria acidentalmente por causa de um pneu furado em seu trator...    

    Acabara de formar uma nova sociedade com alguns amigos numa cooperativa de produção de cinema e televisão e se instalado com seu estúdio digital num endereço muito chique de São Paulo. Vivia desde há uns poucos anos em sua confortável casa de campo no sítio nos arredores da cidade de São Paulo, erguida também com seu próprio esforço uns 25 anos antes quando era ainda um jovem em início de carreira. Há poucos anos acabara de juntar-se com sua neo companheira, Sissi, alma gêmea em seus projetos e aventuras, e alguns de seus filhos: John, o filho homem mais velho, de seu casamento anterior com Emily, e Alevino e Mim, filhos de Sissi em seu casamento anterior.

    Tinha ainda dois outros filhos de outros dois casamentos, Daniela, sua primogênita, e Jéfferson, seu caçula, e esperava ardorosamente que um dia eles também se vissem interessados em juntar-se à troupe na casa de campo e que finalmente se tornasse real seu antigo sonho de há muito tempo almejado: Don Licas achava que reunira então todas as condições para junto com Sissi formarem a grande família que sempre sonhara e vivessem todos na paz do Senhor muito próximo à natureza. Para isso, durante todos aqueles anos de sua vida investira um grande esforço físico e financeiro erguendo seus dois refúgios, no campo e na praia, e finalmente agora, após mais de 20 anos de tentativas frustradas, ele se mudara definitivamente para a casa de campo como tanto sonhara...

    Diariamente viajava de carro pelas estradas maravilhosas e perigosas da região, indo da casa no campo para seu estúdio na capital e vice-versa, muitas vezes durante a madrugada e após longa e cansativa jornada de trabalho. Mas, foi num destes inacreditáveis desdobramentos de sua vida -uma bobeada ao ligar seu tratorde cortar grama numa calma manhã de sábado- que provocou o acidente que acabou por interromper todas suas atividades e ter literalmente mudado radicalmente sua vida.

    Com grande risco à sua vida, quase perdeu sua perna direita que ficou engessada até a virilha por  quase um ano.
    A radical mudança de século tornava-se também uma mudança radical em sua vida...

... Don Licas remembered when he was still a child, back in the 1950s.    He had always imagined how  the transition from the twentieth to the twenty-first century would be like. He even doubted he would be present at this time because the story current at that time was that the world would not reach the year 2000 due to a devastanting third world war. He also doubted he would be so long-lived to reach his 50 years at exactly the turn of the century.    But there he was ready to witness the long awaited turn of the century.    His life had been so far full of rare events and very interesting passages.    He is then a successful guru in digital arts and computer science once he had been one of the pioneers in these areas in his country. He soon became emotionally and financially very strong due to his revolutionary professional activity. Very well rewarded by the blessings of life and by his early abilities, at his twenty years he already ride his own motorcycle and his own big car, purchased with pays from his own effort. In his youth there was no lack of money nor of beautiful women nor the many trips to the four corners of the world that his professional activity required and a lot of knowledge and insights brought to him.    Still very young, at age of 25, has loomed as a seasoned professional with deep knowledge of the digital technologies that were being discovered at that moment in history, and which he helped to develop well into the information technology mecca of the moment, the United States. In the middle of the biggest technology boom of the twentieth century, and perhaps the entire history of mankind, there was Don Licas studying and developing world projects as the important online real-time projects for CitiBank, Sears and others, exploring the infinite capacity of a fantastic discovery of those years, the electronic microprocessor.    At 32 he became the leader of another world project bringing together the world's largest commodities exchanges in another on-line real-time system, his specialty at the time, which led him to participate in the development of the famous and revolutionary multi- tasking Intel 80286 microprocessor, the heart and brain of the famous IBM PC-AT's from the early '80s.  In this contract he was a Beta-tester for the Intel Corporation with access to the development of the micro computers digital technology of the giant corporation in Houston, Texas. There he had the same privileged access to technical information for developing new products with similar status of engineers from another competitor, emerging at the same time in the U.S. and created in a garage, called Microsoft, owned by an engineer about his age called Bill Gates.     In this golden age of the 80s, at his early thirty years old, he spoke four languages ​​and had lived abroad in two diferent countries. He had been married twice and had had two children, both born abroad and in different countries. Very experienced and articulated, he had created in Brazil new and advanced products such as the ATM machines software for the first electronic banking systems and electronic points of sale for the department stores chains, demonstrated at technical conferences and fairs for  IT specialists and even to the president of the republic and his ministers. Uttered technical speechs at events and universities demonstrating his ideas and developments to an audience too lacking of current information and innovative techniques in a country that had fallen behind by two decades as a result of the Market Reserve Act created by the General-Presidents imposed to the country by the Military Revolution of 1964.    This had been the cornerstone of Don Licas. His determination and courage to leave his comfortable and profitable public job at the city of San Bernardino and his option to join the multinational computer companies operating in the country has made him a professional with unique knowledge for the Brazilian standard of that time and very much disputed and well paid by local businessmen who wanted to innovate their business by applying the revolutionary new electronic tools developed in the U.S..    It did not take him much long to become independent and establish his first business, a software development and consulting company for new computer products. Large companies hired him for bold and gigantic contracts which involved the establishment of new businesses in Brazil as well as in the USA. He became a regular user of international flights and often found himself in two or three countries in the same week.    Unlike the simplicity of his life in childhood he became an influential person in his field and was paid the best wages among the executives of his era. With that, he had become rich. Erected a significant asset and missed no pleasures. His abundant and showy life was a very big attraction for everyone. Especially for women ... The many women in his life.
    ... Fact is that, now in 1999, after many adventures and many achievements, about to turn 50 years, Don Licas was ready to begin a new, stunning and unexpected phase in his life. And it all happened accidentally because of a puncture in his lawnmower tractor tire...    He had just formed a new company with some friends in a film and television cooperative production and got installed with his digital studio in a very chic address in Sao Paulo city. He lived since a few years in his comfortable villa on the outskirts of Sao Paulo city, also built by his own efforts some 25 years earlier when he was still a young man in early his career. A few years earlier he had just joined at the villa with his neo fellow girl companion, Sissi, soul mate in his projects and adventures, and some of their children: John, the eldest son from his previous marriage to Emily, and Alevino and Mim, Sissi's children in her previous marriage.    He also had two other children from two other previous marriages, Daniela, his first child, and Jéfferson, his youngest son, and hoped fervently that one day they also found themselves interested in joining the troupe in the villa, what would finally make real his former and long-sought dream: Don Licas thought that he then gathered all the conditions for, along with Sissi, to form the great family that he always dreamed of and all could live very close to nature in Lord's peace. For this reason he invested such a great physical and financial effort in his whole life building up his two sanctuaries in the countryside and on the beach, and finally now, after more than 20 years of failed attempts, he moved permanently to the cottage as he dreamed so hard about...    Daily he drove down the beautiful and dangerous roads of the  region, ranging from the country house to his studio in the capital and vice versa, often overnight and after a long and tiring workday. But it was only because one of those incredible consequences of a foolish move, while replacing his lawnmower tractor's wheel on a quiet Saturday morning, which caused the accident that eventually stoped all his activities and have literally changed his lives radically.    With great risk to his life, he almost lost his right leg that was plastered to the groin for almost a year.    The radical century change has also become his life's radical change...

    Segundo se fala por ai, um homem não pode deixar de fazer três coisas básicas durante sua vida:

    A primeira é plantar uma árvore. A segunda é fazer um filho, e a terceira é escrever um livro.

    Árvores eu já plantei muitas, literalmente milhares delas. Numa terra que era apenas um enorme pasto de gado sem nenhuma árvore, o sítio em Jarinu, tornou-se hoje uma verdadeira floresta da mata atlântica...

    Filhos eu fiz três, a Gabi em Março de 1978, o Jonny em Dezembro 1982 e Jeff em Junho de 1991.

    Livros não escrevi nenhum ainda, este será o primeiro, mas já escrevi muitas, mas muitas coisas durante a minha vida, pois escrever é um hábito que cultivo desde que era muito jovem, um menino ainda. Foram desde velhas cartas manuscritas em português e em inglês para muitas pessoas queridas que tomaram seus caminhos para longe de mim, até os longos e minuciosos artigos para a Revista Brasil Etc, que circula na Europa, passando pelos inúmeros projetos de informática, memorandos sobre eventos importantes em minha vida, e principalmente o Jornal Terra Nostra que circulou em quase 200 edições e do qual fui o editor.

    Nos últimos tempos comecei a desenhar este projeto e nunca soube sobre o que escreveria. Somente agora consegui chegar à esta conclusão.

    Este livro será revolucionário, primeiro porque instituirá uma nova forma literária, que a batizo aqui de "Interactive Reality Fiction". Segundo porque acho que ele despertará muito interesse em pessoas que conheci durante toda minha vida e que hoje não temos mais contato, e em terceiro lugar porque será uma oportunidade para meus filhos conhecerem mais sobre alguém que eles não tiveram a oportunidade ou não quiseram conhecer melhor.

    O personagem central da história é  Don Licas, um sonhador inveterado e um apaixonado pela vida, que não se contentava em viver a mesmice de todos que o cercavam. Em sua busca pela perfeita harmonia da vida ousou voando sempre mais alto que os outros, encantando-se com as alturas que conseguia alcançar e não poucas vezes se estrebuchando nas aterrisagens que se via obrigado a fazer nas vezes em que a realidade da vida insistia em traze-lo de volta de suas buscas.

    ... Nossa história começa em São Paulo, no Brasil no ano de 1999, aproximadamente, na virada do século...

According to talk around, a man can not miss doing three basic things during his life:
    The first is to plant a tree. The second is to make a child, and the third is to write a book.
    I've planted many trees, literally thousands of them. In a land that was just a huge cattle pasture without any trees, the ranch in Jarinu, has turned today into an exuberant Mata Atlantica forest...
     I made three children, Gabi in March 1978, Jonny in December 1982 and Jeff in June 1991.
     I haven't written any books yet, this is the first one, but I have written many, many things during my life, because writing is a habit cultivated since I was very young, still a boy. From the old handwritten letters in Portuguese and English sent to many loved ones who took their paths away from me, to the long and detailed articles for Brazil Etc Magazine, which circulates in Europe, through the numerous information technology projects, notes and memoranduns on important envents in my life, and especially the newspaper Terra Nostra circulated in nearly 200 editions and which I was the editor.
    Recently I began designing this project  and never knew what to write about. Only now I have managed to reach this conclusion.
    This book will be revolutionary, first because it establishes a new literary form, which is here called "Interactive Reality Fiction." Second, because I think it will arouse much interest in people I met throughout my life and now we have no more contact, and thirdly because it will be a chance for my children to know more about someone they have not had the opportunity or did not want to know better.
    The story's central character is Don Licas, an inveterate dreamer and a passionate for life, not content to live the sameness of everybody around him. In his search for the perfect harmony of life he dared flying higher than the others, delighting himself with the heights he could reach, and often crashing down in the landings he was obliged to do at times when the reality of life persisted in bring him back from his searches.
